With inspiration from a presentation by Betty Garner, our group of Lamphere teachers met to discuss our thoughts about math leadership. We felt strongly about the importance of sharing our knowledge with the parents of our students. Having put into practice and recognizing the power of one simple question, "What do you notice?," we were motivated to create the attached documents.
At each of our four elementary schools we are distributing monthly math information to families in grades PK-5. Each school is using these documents in the way that best suits their school's distinct needs. At three of the schools we are distributing the calendar with an additional do-it-yourself activity. At our school with a large ELL population, they are sending home a step-by-step activity, that is also translated into Arabic and attaching the necessary supplies.
We are trying to communicate our efforts to our families by displaying a "Math Surrounds Us" bulletin board in the lobby of each school. Students are encouraged to contribute math evidence or products to be displayed on the bulletin boards.We also have a Math Surrounds Uswebpage on our district website. This page is a work in progress.
